Giuseppe Arcimboldo was born at Milano in 1527, and begins becoming famous with the realization of a portfolio of stained glass for the Milano Cathedral, including Stories of Sainte Catherine from Alexandria (1548-1557)
In 1562, he’s enrolled at the Prague court where he becomes the favorite painter of Maximilien – the emperor- and then, of Rodolph III. His caricature portraits linked the face of characters with a combination of flowers, fruits, animals… Portrait with vegetables, Vertumne
Besides, it’s with this technique that Arcimboldo made the famous series in 1563 titled The Seasons
. It was four profile portraits mixed with fruits and vegetables of each seasons.
Both an illusionism and fantasy paint, it has been considered as an anticipating of some sides of surrealism and has been crowned with a great success.
