Hans Holbein the Younger was a German painter and printmaker, born in Augsburg in 1497 and died in London November 29, 1543. Son of the painter Hans Holbein the Elder (c. 1460-1524), he is the younger brother of the painter Ambrosius Holbein (c. 1493 to 1494 - to 1519), with whom he studied in his father's workshop. In 1515 his family moved to Basel, a center of humanism, where it binds with Erasmus. From 1516 to 1526, working for the merchant class, he produced portraits, religious works, murals, stained glass and carvings. The art museum of the city of Basel and has the largest collection of works by the Holbein family. During this period, he performed as many trips to Lucerne in Switzerland or Italy, Rome and Florence. Influenced by Matthias Grünewald but also by Leonardo da Vinci, he discovers in a trip to France, his style is open to new designs of the Italian Renaissance. In 1526, fleeing the Reformation, he moved to London, recommended by Erasmus to Thomas More. This period constitutes the peak of his career. It implements the project of a triumphal arch for the entry of Anne Boleyn in London and painted the painting The Ambassadors in 1533. The latter is particular. Indeed, some of this work is produced by the process of anamorphosis. Thus, if the light is positioned over the left edge of the table, one sees a human skull in the middle of the two characters. The presence of this skull makes this table a memento mori, reminding humility. Both characters being invited to remember that they are mortal like everyone else. In 1536, named painter and valet of Henry VIII, he became in a short time the official painter of the English court. In 1543, in full glory, he died of the plague.
