Flemish painter born in 1450, he probably worked in the family workshop in his youth and he worked in his native city until his death.
In his youth, his paintings represented degrees of vivid colour, of significantly definite faces and rather traditional compositions. Progressively, the artist brought mysterious elements to his work which characterise in a more precise way the satirical genre of his representations, until the master pieces of his maturity.
In his work one finds the denunciation of human folly, which leads to a blind loss driven by an insatiable thirst for earthly possessions, the presence of the demon in human affairs, and especially fantastic representations such as the depths of hell, or the delights of Paradise.
His influence on the artistic tradition of the Netherlands was immediate and particularly strong at least until the beginning of the XVIII century.
